Quotes to Live By: Brene’ Brown

I have recently finished reading The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene’ Brown. An excellent book and a highly recommended read. I gleaned from it some amazing quotes, not just from her but other authors she quoted within the book. Instead of another book summary and review let me leave you with bits and pieces of HER writing. Here are some creativity inspiring, life inspiring quotes that I discovered.

  1. “There are only people who use their creativity and people who don’t. Unused creativity doesn’t just disappear. It lives within us until it’s expressed, neglected to death or suffocated by resentment and fear.”
  2. “If we want to make meaning, we need to make art.”
  3. “As long as we are creating, we’re cultivating meaning.”
  4. (Dr. Stuart Brown) “The opposite of play is not work- the opposite of play is depression.”
  5. (Dr. Stuart Brown) “Play helps us deal with difficulties, provides a sense of expansiveness, promotes mastery of our craft, and is an essential part of the creative process. Most important, true play that comes from our own inner needs and desires is the only path to finding lasting joy and satisfaction in our work.”
  6. (Howard Thurman) “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
  7. “Laughter, song, and dance create emotional and spiritual connection; they remind is of the one thing that truly matter when we are searching for comfort, celebration, inspirations or healing: We Are Not Alone.”
  8. “When we value being cool and in control over granting ourselves the freedom to unleash the passionate, goofy, heartfelt and soulful expressions of who we are, we betray ourselves.”
  9. “The truth is meaningful change is a process. It can be uncomfortable and is often risky, especially when we’re talking about embracing our imperfections, cultivating authenticity, and looking the world in the eye and saying, ‘I am enough.'”
  10. “Wholehearted living is about engaging in out lives from a ┬áplace of Worthiness. It’s about cultivating the courage, compassion and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.”

So Read the Book! Its a quick and fun read. Brene’ Brown as a great wit and comfortable, easy style of writing. She is totally relatable as she bares her own imperfections. I only read her books after watching her TedX talk on Vulnerability and two interviews with Chase Jarvis on YouTube. Also GREAT viewing. (Here’s the second one).

I just started her nest book, Daring Greatly, with my highlighter and notebook, just like I did with The Gifts of Imperfection. I never really like highlighting or writing in my books until now because there is so much to glean from what she is saying. And I have to say, I am a bit biased because anyone who supports creativity and values its importance as much as I do, usually gets a recommendation from me.

  1. I printed this page out to tuck inside my notebook for my upcoming train trip. I am already taking materials for writing…and for sketching out other ways to express myself… but for those moments when I am feeling stumped, this is an inspiring collection of quotes. And personally, I consider myself a word artist who also LOVES to collect and respond to quotes in my journals, especially when all I have staring back at me is that mysteriously powerful blank page. Thank you for sharing these .
